Description

The gohma creatures are the largest land-living arthropoda in the world. The species inhabits the coastal forest regions of Hyrule, although localized extinction has occurred where the creature is in close contact with man.

Generally nocturnal, they remain hidden during the day and emerge only on some nights to forage. The crustaceans are known for their ability to crack boulders with their strong pincers in order to make more room in their dens.

It is also called the robber bug, because of some gohma’s tendencies to steal shiny items such as pots or silverware from houses and tents.

Reports concerning the size of gohma vary, but most witnesses and references give a body length of up to 22 in, a weight of up to 15 lbs, and a leg span of more than 3.8 ft, with females generally being larger than males. It should be noted that there have been reports of “Queen Gohma” specimens of enormous size reported, but the existence of a “Queen Gohma” has never been confirmed. Typical Gohma can live for more than 30 years.

There is some difference in color between the animals found in different forests, ranging from light violet through deep purple to brown. The hardened abdomen protects the gohma, but has to molted at periodic intervals. After molting, it takes about 30 days for the exoskeleton to harden, during which time the animal’s body is soft and vulnerable, and it stays hidden for protection.

The most distinctive organ of the gohma is its single eye. While most of the gohma’s body is covered in a tough shell, the single eye is large and protected only by two thick, transparent membranes that the crustacean uses to blink. They have excellent nocturnal eyesight and can detect interesting movement over large distances.

It is completely unknown how gohma reproduce, but it is again worth mentioning that some believe they exist as a hive species; wherein there is a single female queen whose sole duty is the coordination and continuation of the colony.

The diet of gohma consists primarily of various animals and carrion. They have also been observed scavenging the carcasses of their own kind. Gohma will often try to steal food from each other and will pull their food into their burrows to be safe while eating.

Gohma typically live together in underground burrows and rock crevices, depending on the local terrain. They dig their burrows in sand or loose soil.

This creature, with its intimidating size and strength, has a special position in Hylian culture. The gohma is admired for its strength but feared for its appetite and large numbers. Additionally, should anyone attempt to eat the creature, the gohma is poisonous. It is believed that the poison comes from a gland inside the creatures gut that secretes a chemical used for digestion.

"The species inhabits the coastal forest regions of Hyrule"

Presumably because it would have to retreat to the oceans when it molts, and wait there until its new shell hardened? That would make the most sense, considering its size.
