Description

The Zola are an ancient species of Hyrule that is closely related to the more peaceful Zora. Early Zola lived in the Last glacial period for a span of roughly 100,000 years, but because of the damaging effect that the glacial period had on Hyrule, not much is known about the early species. Additionally, Zola skeletal remains are difficult to identify because of the wide adaptability and rapid evolutionary changes that the species undergo.

Some debate exists among scholars concerning the exact relation that the Zola have to the considerably more advanced Zora; some maintain that the two are simply coincedentally similar, while the followers of naturalist Mizumi believe that the Zora are a divergent evolution of the ancient Zola. To date, no intimate connection has been found between the two races, though the Zola are too violent for close study and the Zora are typically less than forthcoming with any information. Regardless of their classification, it is widely accepted that the first Zola appeared as early as 400,00 years ago in Hyrule's history, making them younger than only the Gorons amongst the higher races.

Despite their physical similarities, Zola possess a number of very distinct characteristics from their Zora cousins. Although some classic Zola possessed the moist amphibious skin that the Zora do, it appears that the trait was bred out over the ages as modern Zola are piscine in nature. Zola possess distinct murky scale-plates that are very light, but considerably durable. In addition, Zola respire in the same fashion as fish, filtering water over distal gills located on the sides of their neck; the action looks so similar to mouth-breathing that some misguided Hylians believe the Zola to be amphibous, but this theory has been disproven numerous times.

While a very crude species, the Zola are nevertheless roughly capable of abstract thought. Zola make advanced tools, have a rudimentary language, and live in complex tribal groups. Some Zola settlements even suggest that the race constructs crude homes in the murky depths that are similar to submerged beaver dams. Zola are exclusively carnivorous apex predators, and pose a significant threat to any species foolish enough to wander into their hunting waters; on the other hand, Zola are clumsy and ungainly on land. Therefore the typical Zola hunting strategy for terrestrials is to lie in wait beneath the depths until their prey strays to the water's edge, at which time the Zola attack the target from a distance with pelted rocks or spears.
