The Legend of Zelda-Deadhand

The twitching and shambling mass of decay known as the Deadhand is, for all intents and purposes, an evil spirit of the same order as the malevolent supernatural beings that came to be known as Floormasters and Wallmasters to the Hylians. However, upon closer inspection, one will see that this particular type of wight is more atrocious than any other undead found throughout the darker reaches of Hyrule Kingdom. The Deadhand was once a wicked mortal spellcaster who gained considerable power and embraced the cursed state of undeath for a chance to exist forever. For this reason, the Deadhand is universally feared and reviled by mortal beings for their malign existence, their dark intelligence, and their dreadful power.

Although nearly nothing is known about the creation of a Deadhand, rumor claims that despicable rituals involving the sacrifice and cannibalization of the person most precious to the future undead summons a wicked spirit to dwell within them. From this point, the spellcaster simply continues to murder and consume innocent people until the dark thing within them gains enough power to warp the corporeal form of their host into something undead and eternally cursed.

Of course, other accounts exist that claim that the decaying Deadhand can simply be summoned into any dimly lit room where a fearful person spends enough time meditating on its form, and that its barely audible whispers in the silence of the night herald its coming.

Although there are precious few eyewitness accounts of the Deadhand, what little has been gleaned about their behavior suggests that they occupy a suitably unique position amongst the hierarchy of the undead. For example, it has been suggested that they prey on the living to grow and amass power, rather than to satisfy a primitive feeding urge. Additionally, since the Deadhand possesses seemingly eternal longevity, they often use this time to form schemes that take decades to develop, sometimes preferring to simply outlive a foe instead of confronting it; as such, most live in secluded areas of Hyrule where they are content with whatever plots they have in motion.
